2016 ZX14R owners !!!

2016 ZX14R OWNERS !!!! Warning !!!! to all zx14r 2016 and 2017 owners !!!

2016 and 2017 zx14r owners the ECU has been changed from a US model to a European model ECU .

The down fall of this European model ECU is once it tosses a code on the dash you can not remove the code like you would on a 2012 to 2015 zx14r .. In order to remove the codes you must follow the factory service manual .. 5 mins of idle and 10 mins of driving the bike over 25 MPH for 10 mins without going under 25 MPH in that 10 min time frame , This MUST be repeated 3 times to clear the codes !!!! The other way is to return to the Dealer and have them hook up the KDS tool and remove the codes ..

This all came to light because a customer that got a pipe and a P/C from me as well as a ECU flash from Don Guhl Motors called me and said his Ktrac lights were flashing as well as two codes for his ECU , codes 11 and 32 TB TPS sensors .. He had turned the key on when the TB harness was unplugged triggering the codes .. If this were a 2015 and back ECU the fix would be as easy as plugging the wires back in and riding the bike and the codes would clear ... This is not the case with the new 2016 and up zx14r ..
Don Guhl is working on a fix for this problem as well as making the Ktrac default setting work as they do on the 2015 back ECUs flashed ECUs ... Don needs a 2016 ZX14R to do the testing on to repair this problem ..So Don has offered a free flash for your bike if you bring your bike to him for testing ..No dyno time or riding is needed to do this testing and repair and the free flash .. Don is located in Ephrata, Pennsylvania 717 618 4212 .

What kind of ridiculousness is that over 25mph thing?

Sound like something thought up my the same tards that think Hyperbikes are ruining the planet.

Got a flash from Schnitz Racing after installing a full Akrapovic system and going with a BMC air filter on my 2016 ZX-14R ABS SE. Just turned 12K with no problems.

How did I miss this one? Anyway, this is something I'd try if I had this type ECU. Ready?

1. I'd look for a black/yellow wire at the ECU harness connector going into the ECU. This is ground for the ECU.
2. With a jumper wire, I'd have one end grounded to the bike, the other end of the wire wrapped around the ground probe off the multimeter.
3. As the meter is set to 20v, the neg probe with wire at the ECU's neg pin, I now piano key the rest of the pins of the ECU a few times.

Theory:
The capacitor can hold itself closed magnetically [charged] = Memory saved.
By touching one pin at a time so the posi probe draws so much current flow out, the reason for a few strokes across the pins is to drain (ground) the capacitor down to 0000 = The bike starts @ zero.

You can also touch every pin and watch the meter ping, but it is so much faster to drag the probe over the pins a few times than chase each pin. Try that kind of theory.

That'ell work. The point is to empty the capacitor = Volatile memory.

When the key is turned off, some, not all capacitors empty to ground. Others can be flipflopped and save your codes... is the reason to empty the capacitor to see if that turns the bike back to 0000; as if new off the showroom floor and it starts without any codes.

Has Don Guhl had any luck yet? I have his flash on my 16se and have been waiting for a few updates, including the one mentioned, before sending it back for reflash... If I was closer to his shop, I'd let him use mine..

Ok I know I am a little late to the party but I would like to know if it works.
Does this process really work?
“ .. In order to remove the codes you must follow the factory service manual .. 5 mins of idle and 10 mins of driving the bike over 25 MPH for 10 mins without going under 25 MPH in that 10 min time frame , This MUST be repeated 3 times to clear the codes !!!! The other way is to return to the Dealer and have them hook up the KDS tool and remove the codes ..”
The reason I ask is: I purchased a 2016 with a pcv5 and some goofy exhaust on it, plus some other really dumb ass mods. I am taking back to stock, to ride until all my parts come in and weather turns bad. I pulled the pcv and several things. I then started it up! Oops! Forgot to connect the throttle body. So it through a bunch of codes.
But here is the issue. I also broke my foot about the same time (10 days ago). So before I take it out for a ride to clear the codes, I would like To know that it does, before I take it out. Yea I should wait, but that is not in my DNA.

Now come winter I will put a full exhaust system and have it flashed. But until then I would like to get some saddle time.
Thanks for any and all advice!

What you described for clearing codes sounds familiar. Hub will know. I'm pretty sure he was the one I heard explain this a while back.

It might seem like a good alternative to riding the bike if you put it on a stand and run it with you sitting on it but I wouldn't. With al that mass turning, it might flip the stand. Now that would be ugly.

Yes that method works I've used it 3 times before I got smart and bought a Kawasaki specific adapter that works on any 30 dollar code reader. Mine came from England but China sells them too. Sometimes you need to run the bike while on a rear wheel lift and that will throw a code too.

Rook - thanks, no, with my luck lately, I don’t think that would be a good idea!

Suzi1052 - thanks. I will look at you link. I may go that route.

The one Harley has done right: is allow you to read the codes on the odometer and clear them by holding a button and turning the key on.

Kawasaki can build a 300 that will break the sound barrier, And last A 100,000 miles, but not clear the codes on the bike with the simple turn of the key.

Depending on the foot, I will take it out and clear the codes today. Thanks

Hey Suzy1052
So how does it work?
Is that min of 5 min at idle (5 1/2 ok)
Is it a min of 10 at a min of 25mph, 12 min ok?
Thanks

That's fine... you can actually do it over a couple of days of riding without trying/knowing. The key is to turn off the ignition after every segment. No pun intended. You don't have to do everything at once it accumulates so when you get off of the xway turn the key off. Go thru a few lights then key off etc.

Suzy1052
Thanks for the advice. I learned something today. Read completely! Oops. For a bunch of excuses, I just got around to taking the bike out. Three sets of 5 and 10. Did not work. Reread your post. Oops did not turn the key off. I got at least one done. Pretty chilly mistake at 39 degrees!

You can try cycling the key maybe 5-10 times, allowing some seconds in between on and off for the ecu to process.I do think this will work.Definitely allow it to sweep the needles and then wait/cycle off key.

Yea
I never turned it. Now I know. Rode around for a hour at 39/40 degree day. Oh well, a ride is a ride.

suzy1052: where did you get the Kawasaki specific adapter. The china knockoffs will take until the year 2525 to get here. So that is my second choice.
For some reason I cannot get it to reset. I let it idle for 8 min. turn the key off. Restart and ride for 12 min. stop turn the key off. and repeat. It is a pain, because it is hard to ride above 25 mph for over 10 min in my neck of the woods. It is a busy Island and there is always someone stopping in front of you and a stretch long enough is rare. I have already gone through a tank of gas trying it. Plus if there is something causing the code, I am chasing my tail. That is why I think I will get the adapter.
Larry

Update:
I ordered a cable and a scanner from Woolich Racing

Thanks

Tried like heck to do the drive and idle clearing of codes. Failed every attempt. Riding in 30’s did not help. Purchased the reader and cable adapter. So very very very very very very very happy I went that route. Cleared the codes in 2 seconds, slightly longer than a good sneeze.

Thank you for the help. I have ZX14R 2016 and my dash show me code 11 and 32 TB TPS SENSORS.I did 5 mins of idle and 10 mins of driving the bike over 25 MPH for 10 mins without going under 25 MPH and repeated 3 times and the codes clear.
